Surgical Deliverance and Excellent Healing Prognosis

As a part of Hand anatomy:

Finger is a hinge joint and organ that allows movement only in one direction. Considered to be a part of the hand, the fingers are made of bones called phalanges and though each finger moves independently they are inter connected by tendons and muscles thus making completely free movement of each finger difficult.

Manipulates and Creates Sensation:

Joints in the fingers are perhaps the most delicate and joined with the hand they work as a machinery to aid you in daily activities, manipulating movements and causing sensations in the hand to hold or grasp things. Working of the hand would be impossible without fingers as they comprise of a network of tissues and muscles that are inter linked and dependent on each other.

Traumatic and Enervating Ailment:

Pain, swelling or numbness causing loss of motion in the fingers arising out of an injury caused by machine work, playing sports or self inflicted or a medical debilitating condition such as arthritis or trigger finger, might result in laceration, crushed tissue, fracture or expose a bone.

Non surgical techniques for finger problems

The movement of fingers is facilitated by the muscles of the forearm, above the wrist. The flexor tendons extend from the forearm muscles and passing through the wrist connect to the finger and thumb bones to enable their mobility.

In cases of injuries and degenerative or congenital disease the fingers lose their ability to straighten or bend and thus need to be effectively treated to enable proper functionality.

Conditions for treatment:

Severe conditions cannot be treated with nonsurgical techniques. They are relieved with the help of finger surgery. Non surgical treatments only help in reducing enervating pain and stiffness they also act as customary tools that lay the basis of surgical techniques. Among the many debilitating conditions that affect the fingers, some conditions that are provided relief with the help of non surgical techniques are-

  • - Trigger Fingers
  • - Fracture in the finger bone
  • - De Quervain’s Tendonitis
  • - Dupuytren’s Contracture
  • - Boutonniere Deformity

Non surgical modalities:

There are various non surgical techniques. They refer to modalities under which the limb is provided relief with the help of physical methods without exposing it to repair the damage.

Non-Steroidal Oral Medications: anti-inflammatory oral medicines (NSAIDs) are prescribed by the finger surgeon to reduce the pain and swelling for a period that is considered apt. The pain killers can be taken orally or applied as a gel on the affected area.

Steroid Injections: insertion of corticosteroid injections are taken up by the finger surgeon only if the pain in the fingers does not subside after oral prescriptions. They are inserted into the tendon sheath at the base of the affected finger to reduce the debilitating pain. If the injections fail to bring down the pain or swelling then surgery is taken up to relieve the condition.

Splints: In cases where the joint needs rest and some activities need to be avoided, the surgeon straps a plastic splint around the finger to immobilize it for a definite period.

Buddy Taping: When a finger sustains injury or loses mobility, the adjacent finger is taken up as a support and both fingers are tied together with a tape/splint to immobilize them, till the period that is considered necessary for healing.

Therapy exercises: Gentle stretching exercises, massages and manipulation techniques help in improving the mobility of the fingers and hand and with the assistance of an occupational therapist the patient learns how to cope up to tasks with the problematic finger.

Complications:

Possible complications that have probability in non surgical techniques are the side reaction of the oral prescriptions or injections.

Another possible complication may be the failure of non surgical techniques in providing relief, which might result in taking up surgical techniques.

Benifits:

Pain and stiffness reduces with appropriate oral medications and corticosteroid injections.

- No surgical intervention is necessary in mild cases.

- An intensive rehabilitation program acts as a supporting tool to recovery.
