Finger is a hinge joint and organ that allows movement only in one direction. Considered to be a part of the hand, the fingers are made of bones called phalanges and though each finger moves independently they are inter connected by tendons and muscles thus making completely free movement of each finger difficult.
Joints in the fingers are perhaps the most delicate and joined with the hand they work as a machinery to aid you in daily activities, manipulating movements and causing sensations in the hand to hold or grasp things. Working of the hand would be impossible without fingers as they comprise of a network of tissues and muscles that are inter linked and dependent on each other.
Pain, swelling or numbness causing loss of motion in the fingers arising out of an injury caused by machine work, playing sports or self inflicted or a medical debilitating condition such as arthritis or trigger finger, might result in laceration, crushed tissue, fracture or expose a bone.
Fingers may sustain traumatic injury borne problems or get affected by degenerative diseases thus impairing the movement of the hand or vice –versa, which need effective finger surgery techniques. Among the many, some conditions that can only be relieved by surgery are-
- Severe fractures/ dislocations
- Ruptured Ligaments
- Osteoarthritis
- Tendonitis
- Dupuytren’s Contracture
- Trigger Finger
Finger surgery is delicate and requires skill with innovative application to bring back life into the immobile and dead fingers. The technique that may be applied depends on the severity or complexity of the trauma borne.
Minimally invasive surgery: Under this procedure the surgeon gives anesthesia to the patient letting him drift into a deep sleep or numbs the part where the surgery has to be performed. Small incisions are made in the palm or the finger and damaged tendons or nerves are repaired by special surgical instruments. This surgery takes minimal time and the patient is not required to stay overnight.
Percutaneous Fixation surgery: Unstable and displaced fractures which cannot be manipulated by closed reduction are surgically repaired. The broken bones are exposed and the bones are held together by metal pins called K-wires. They are inserted through the skin and passed from one bone fragment to another to hold them together.
Open surgery: Under this surgery the specialist makes a longer incision to repair a severely damaged tendon or removes the tissue that is causing discomfort. In severe cases when the tissues have damaged irreparably, the surgeon removes the complete tissue network and the attached skin thereafter covering it with skin graft. Sometimes the surgeon also performs joint transfer in which he takes a part of the toe and replants it in the finger joint which is damaged.
The patient should consult our medical team >>click here for appointmentAfter evaluating the reason of finger degradation, the hand surgeon decides on the type of finger surgery technique that would be best applicable. The patient is informed of the benefits and the complications involving the surgical technique for his condition. He is further asked to provide all relevant information relating to his reactions towards particular chemical compositions if any, prescriptions he is on, anesthesia allergies if any and all routine reports by his general physician that he is medically fit for the surgery.
After giving local or general anesthesia to the patient, the surgeon performs the surgery which has already been concluded. The surgeon makes incisions on the finger joint or the palm and repairs the damaged tendon, tissue or bone. The time that is taken to perform the surgery depends on whether it is invasive or lengthy. In both the cases the time does not extend beyond 45 minutes to an hour. After the surgery the surgeon stitches back the open joint and bandages them.
After the surgery the hand and fingers are wrapped in a bandage. Stitches are scheduled to be removed after a few days. The surgeon keeps the patient under close monitoring for a few hours after the surgery and then releases him/her after observing the progress as expected. The patient is given a set of written instructions regarding medicines; follow up visit and precautionary measures including activities that should be prohibited.
As surgery is a delicate procedure it might involve certain complications. The complications with finger surgical techniques may vary from an infection to stiffness and pain in the finger. The nerve may incur permanent damage during surgery, losing sensation in the affected area. The surgery may fail to bring complete flexion or extension functionality to the finger.
Proper implementation of rehabilitation protocols is an essential prerequisite for complete healing after surgery. To enable mobility in the stiff finger the physiotherapist takes aid of gentle exercises, massages and manipulates sensation back into the finger. In cases where the patient is having difficulty performing everyday activities an occupational therapist provides practical support to make them easier.

The fingers can be mildly moved right after the surgery to avoid stiffness though mobility should return after a week or two. Driving can be resumed after a week and working on the computer or writing can be done within the first week of the surgery. Complete flexion of the fingers returns after a few weeks, after which the patient can perform all normal tasks but without over exerting them so that they do not get injured again.
Surgical techniques provide almost complete relief to the hand helping to bring back extension and flexion in the fingers. The surgical techniques vary from minimally invasive technique to skin grafting and joint transfer technique. The patient has less pain, no visible scar and he is not required to stay overnight when treated with invasive surgery or percutaneous fixation.
Severe problems are treated by open and lengthy surgery which is successful in rejuvenating the dead finger.
